Event: Planning Session
Where: Turner Volvo 2535 Arden Way Sacramento, CA 95825 Date: Sunday, February 8, 2009 Time: 10:00A Notes: Lunch provided Planning Session On February 8th, an informal planning committee of Sacramento area members convened at Turner Volvo in Sacramento to begin organizing Chapter events for 2009. As a result, eight or more events have been scheduled for the remainder of the year. Just as exciting, Sacramento club member Elizabeth Brown has taken the lead to develop a website for the chapter. All of the Planning Committee members contributed to the development of this website, and we feel that it is among the more comprehensive resources within VCOA. We welcome you to view our website at www.sacvolvoclub.org. We will look forward to your comments, opinions and suggestions.

The shop is located in Rancho Cordova, California, just east of the State Capital City of Sacramento. The weather was beautiful and sunny. Fifteen people with their vehicles attended, including a 544, 240, 740s, 850s, 940, V70s, S40, C30, and a beautiful 780 Bertone. We also had an attendee who drove a 1993 Saab 900 convertible. Participants came to this Sacramento area event from as far away as Napa, Tracy and the state of Nevada. Peter answered numerous questions, ranging from general routine maintenance to engine conversions for older cars. The C30 was put on the lift and other cars were brought into the shop for observation and Q & A. After the questions were answered, the event became less technical and more social as we moved outside to enjoy the day, admire the Swedish Steel, and chat outside the shop. The conversation was then moved to a local Chinese restaurant where we enjoyed a hearty and leisurely lunch.

With many car shows occurring during the spring, this event was timely. Jon presented detail on how car shows are structured and what judges look for when evaluating cars in both stock and modified classifications. Following the lecture (and a dissertation of the evolution of car shows over the last 100 years, with photos) Jon took us outside and performed a top to bottom evaluation on a couple of our candidate 122’s, using judging criteria as developed by VCOA.

Davis Car Show and Swap Meet (As seen on pages 10-11 in July/August 2009 Rolling, Vol. 27, No. 4)
The eleventh annual Davis
( California ) meet on April 26 was once again a great success. On a
brisk spring day over 200 Volvo enthusiasts brought about 122 cars to
the event, representing nearly every model Volvo has imported to the
USA: 544 (6), Duett (1), 1900 (1), 120 (9), 1800 (13), 1800 ES (4), 140
(4), 160 (1), 240 (24), 262 (1), 700 (12), 780 (4), 800 (15), 900 (2),
C30 (4), C70 (1), S40 (1), S60 (9), V 70 (8), and XC 60 (2 - dealer
cars). 13 of the 800/S60/V70 were R models. It was a nice group of
restored and original older cars, some of the newest models, and a big
turnout of 200, 700 and later models modified for higher performance.
This year the meet was co-sponsored by the Golden Gate Chapter and the newly organized Sacramento Chapter. People's Choice Awards were presented by Golden Gate Chapter Chair C.J. Yother. Best of Show went once again to Lars Jansson, San Anselmo, for his restored P1900. Other awards went to Pasqual Castro (544); Glenn Schneider (1800ES); Roger Vonverhallen (122); Michael Palmer (242GT); Michael Howells (780), Mark Baldwin (850 T5); and Nigel Sun (C30). Sacramento Chapter Chair Jeff Molander presented a special gift to Elizabeth Brown ("volvie!"), who designed the new Sacramento Chapter website and researched most of its content. The website includes a vast archive of Volvo-related materials and links. Be sure to visit www.sacvolvoclub.org. Thanks also to Davis meet sponsors and raffle contributors: R Sport International, IPD, Turner Volvo, Lawrence Volvo, Carlsen Volvo, Adobe Road Winery, Sharp HID, Roger Vonverhallen, Evil Genius Racing, and Mike Dudek of iRoll Motors. Special appreciation goes to Helen and Gary Lodge for cooking hotdogs and selling drinks again this year. As always, thanks to club members too numerous to mention who contributed their time and energy at the meet to make things run smoothly. The meet has been held annually since 1999 at Central Park in Davis, a college town about 75 miles northeast of Sacramento . Attendees always say the park is a great place for a car show: There's shade (from trees and the roof of a big open air pavillion); a walkable downtown and restaurants nearby; and loads of small city charm. Memorable details this year: The best swap meet in years – including a vanload of OEM 544/1800/122 parts and accessories. A burgundy 164, in excellent condition, once owned by the parents of rockstar Janis Joplin. John Pagel of Evil Genius Racing leading performance-oriented drivers to a dyno session at his shop after the meet. Even a Morgan roadster showed up late in the day -- driven by a former 1800 owner.

The historic town of Locke was established by Chinese merchants in the 1920’s after a fire in a nearby town destroyed their homes and places of business. The town looks no different today than it did 80 years ago. This trip afforded Sacramento and San Francisco Bay Area VCOA members a drive along narrow levy roads. Fifteen members with ten cars participated, with some members coming from 75 miles away. After walking around and visiting the galleries, we ate lunch at Al’s Place, which has been serving steak sandwiches the same way since the 1950’s. The day began in a reserved section of the parking lot with an informal car show. As the weather warmed up, we moved inside the IKEA conference room for a lunch meeting where we discussed the possibility of expanding our annual dual chapter (Golden Gate VCOA and SacVCOA) Davis event into a West Coast Regional or National Event in 2011. We are still seeking ideas and volunteers. If you are interested, please contact chapter leadership: Jeff Molander, SacVCOA President = Click here to e-mail Jeff; CJ Yother, GGVCOA President = Click here to e-mail CJ The day capped off with a Swedish themed “Great Race /Treasure Hunt” type game where teams of four competed matching wits with trivia, creativity with craft activities, and engineering ability with building and racing an “erector set-like” model of a vehicle.

This museum, operated by the State of California, offers the best chronology on Native American presence and culture in the state. This event has been held in the Sacramento area and the San Francisco Bay Area for many years. The organization puts together car shows, drives and destination events specifically for owners of European cars. As invitees, we enjoyed talking with owners and seeing a wide variety of vintage and contemporary European cars from around our region. With perhaps 50 cars, there was everything from a Lotus Elan, to a Fiat 500, to a Saab 95 commercial vehicle with right-hand steering. We were also pleased with the questions that we received from the participants on the different Volvo models that we brought to the event. Afterward we gathered for lunch at a restaurant in historic Folsom. From 2009 EuroSunday
