Volvo Independent Tech Session and Lunch (As seen on page __ in __/__ 2011 Rolling, Vol. 29, No. _)

The Sacramento Chapter’s third annual tech session hosted by Peter Mausolff at his Independent Volvo shop, on Saturday, March 26th, was a great success. Volvo's represented included three 240's, a 740, a 850, a 850R, and a V70. Peter's shop is located in Rancho Cordova, California, just east of the State Capital of Sacramento. A little rain in the morning didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the group. Several cars made it onto the lift, with many questions answered and some problems solved. Several new faces were in attendance thanks to Gary Sellstrom bringing the Turbo Bricks crew. After the tech session ended, we headed to a local Chinese restaurant where we enjoyed an excellent lunch.

A Note from Mark Baldwin about the (Sacramento) Davis Autocross

I will be the event marshall and run the drivers meeting.  I have a deputy working the gate to check that participants have paid and signed waiver prior to entering the track area.  I have three independent tech inspectors already volunteering  (Peter, Jacob, and Nick from Volvo Independent).

Will need volunteers at sign in table to collect money, have waivers signed, and stamp hands, etc.  Will need timers also.

I am splitting the drivers into two groups.  The first group will be driving while the second group works the track (flaggers, and cone pick-up).  This will switch when the first group finishes their runs.

If you have questions or are interested in volunteering, please e-mail Mark Baldwin.
From looking around the forums, there is also the possibility of:
-Official 1st Annual Davis Autox Rehab BBQ:
http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?p=3748611
"Yup, that's right...it's official.

Mark Baldwin has generously offered up his shop for a BBQ, car wash, etc. following the autox on May 14th.

He also has a lift, tools, etc. for light repairs (no tranny swaps obviously), he'll have a grille, DJ setup for some tunes, a big parking lot, and access to water for washing your car up prior to the show on sunday.

You can bring something to throw on the grille or some cash to put into the fund. I'll probably try for a trip to Costco after the autox to pick up stuff Mark doesn't have, kinda like I did last year at the park.

He has given the okay for some brew but please keep it moderate...we don't need any drunk's or DUI's while leaving his place.

His shop is half-way between Davis and Mather.

Start time is whenever the autox finishes. End time is...well...whenever."

2nd Annual Autocross / 13th Annual Davis Car Show & Swap Meet
(As seen on pages 10-13 in July/August 2011 Rolling, Vol. 29, No. 4)
By Mike Peterson & Jon Manji

To start off the Northern California Volvo weekend, May 14-15, the Sacramento Chapter sponsored an autocross on Saturday that was held at Mather Airport (formerly an Air Force base) just east of Sacramento. Although the course was tighter than last year's due to space restrictions, it still provided a day's worth of entertainment, as driver's competed in Volvos ranging from a 544 to a C30. You were allowed four timed runs of three laps each. Videos can be seen at http://www.sacvolvoclub.org/Home/events/2011-past-events.

A 244 with three different drivers was of special interest. There had been a discussion and a challenge for the best driver on http://www.turbobricks.com/, and this 244 was piloted by all three to determine who the fastest was. One of them, Patrick Dickman, proved to be not only the quickest of the group, but also the overall first place winner, with a "clean" (no cones knocked over) time of 1 minute 11 seconds.

Although the other two 244 drivers came very close to Patrick in time (all three were just one second or one knocked-over cone apart from each other), second place went to Ryan Randall, driving a different Volvo. Ryan had a time just one second slower than Patrick's.

After all of the Volvos had finished their four runs, the competition was opened to non-Volvos. This proved interesting, as an assortment of cars from a S-Class Mercedes-Benz to a Mitsubishi took the course.

Continuing the charity aspect of the autocross that was started last year, this year's proceeds were donated to the City of Rancho Cordova's Police Activities League. Thanks must also go to the numerous sponsors and volunteers who helped staff the autocross.

Sunday, the 13th annual Davis Meet was held. Once again with great success, despite thunderstorms with periods of heavy rain and hail that tested the weather seals on older Volvos. Nearly 100 cars were present. Most were from Northern California, but the entire  West Coast was represented with participants from Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, San Diego, and elsewhere.

Some memorable events this year:
-A boxy, late '70s Volvo C202 4WD all-terrain vehicle, reputedly one of just a couple in the U.S.
-A pair of 1980s 480 ES coupes, never officially imported to the U.S.
-An 850 converted into a pickup, Australian "Ute" style.
-A moment of silence for Hal Locke, 544 enthusiast and longtime VCOA member who died earlier this year. Hal was also a charter member of the North Bay (now Golden Gate) Chapter.

The Davis Meet has been held every year since 1999 at Central Park in Davis, a college town about [75 miles northeast of San Francisco; 15 miles west of Sacramento]. The park, with a big roofed pavilion built for a weekly farmer's market, is a great place for a car show. Normally providing welcome shade, this year it brought refuge from the wintery weather.

The meet was again co-sponsored by the Golden Gate and Sacramento Chapters.

Next year's meet, the 2012 Davis Meet, will be held on April 29, so mark your calendars now for an expanded show-and-shine event, great door prizes, and lots of family fun.

As always, thanks to all the club members, too numerous to mention, who contributed their time and energy and made things run smoothly.

Sacramento International Auto Show (As seen on page 30 in January/February 2011 Rolling, Vol. 30, No. 1)

The Sacramento International Auto Show is the region’s annual new car show and was held at Cal Expo (State fairgrounds in Sacramento) from November 11th to the 13th.

Chapter member Wally Russell displayed his 1962 544 in the EuroSunday Club exhibit at the Show. Volvo was well represented amidst an eclectic array of cars and motorcycles in the exhibit, which included everything from Ferraris and a Noble to a barn-find Goggomobil.

The vehicles in the exhibit were part of a people’s choice competition sponsored by the Show’s presenters, the Greater Sacramento New Car Dealers’ Association. The Association contributed $3,000 in the winning vehicle owner’s name to the Shriners’ Children’s Hospital.
