Social Media Manager News

Our founding Social Media Manager, Mike Baker, recently stepped down from the position:

Hello all,

I'm writing today to let you all know that as of today, November 7th 2017, I will no longer be handling the SacVCOA social media responsibilities.

I took on the position with the anticipation that I would be able to easily keep up but frankly, with the amount of responsibilities and events in my personal life, it is difficult to find time to dedicate to SacVCOA. As such, and as some of you may have already noticed, there has been little to no activity on the SacVCOA social media accounts. I feel the position would be better handled by somebody who can dedicate more time to it.

Thank you all for the opportunity to let me help out in what way I have. Moving forward, I do still wholly intend to attend events and provide photography for SacVCOA as my scheduling permits.

Thanks,
Michael Baker

Thank You Mike Baker

I know you all join me in thanking Mike Baker for his contributions to the club and wish him well.

If you would like to get in touch with him directly, please Contact Us and your message will be forwarded to him:

Sac Volvo Club: Changes Update: Google Sites Migration Timeline Update

posted May 17, 2017, 9:39 PM by Unknown user   [ updated Jan 24, 2018, 6:46 PM ]

Following up with the Changes Progress & Call for Volunteers e-mail and website announcement sent on Monday, January, 23, 2017:

This e-mail contains the following topics:

Sac Volvo Club Websites: New Google Sites Announcement

Original Announcement:

On November 9, 2016, Google announced that the New Google Sites is available to everyone and discussed a migration timeline:

https://gsuiteupdates.googleblog.com/2016/11/a-totally-rebuilt-google-sitesnow.html

Copy and paste from above link RE: Classic to New Google Sites migration:

Please note:
  • In 2017, we’ll provide and recommend options to migrate your sites from the classic Sites to the new Sites.
  • Beginning in 2018, we’ll send a timeline and instructions regarding the gradual process to shut down the classic Sites. The specific date for the shutdown of the classic Sites has yet to be set, but we’ll inform you at least one year in advance of that shutdown.

On May 2, 2017, Google announced an update to the Classic Google Sites to New Google Sites Migration:

https://gsuiteupdates.googleblog.com/2017/05/an-update-on-classic-google-sites.html

Migration tools In Q4 2017, we’ll launch features in the classic Sites that will help site owners migrate their content to the new Sites. In 2018, we’ll provide tools that will enable G Suite admins to effectively manage the migration process. Stay tuned for more details on these features and tools later this year.

Deprecation timeline
We plan to take your feedback on these migration tools into account when scheduling the deprecation and shutdown of the classic Sites. With that mind, we’ll only announce a firm timeline after the migration process is underway for many customers. A few things to note:
  • Once announced, the deprecation schedule will include at least one year of unchanged operation followed by three months of read-only operation. Migration will be possible throughout, including during the read-only phase.
  • When the read-only phase ends, all unmigrated sites will be preserved as a takeout archive.
  • Before deprecating the classic Sites, we’ll ensure that the new Sites includes several features necessary for team sites, portals, knowledge bases, and intranets. These will include at least the following:
    • Search a site
    • Restrict access to published sites
    • More granular access to different sections of sites
    • Embed URLs and code in sites
    • Notifications of site updates
    • Create larger sites, including deeper hierarchy
    • Corporate themes
    • More text formatting options
    • Custom web addresses
    • API capabilities

Message from Mike Baker, Sac Volvo Club Social Media Manager:

Hey guys,

As part of SacVCOA's new social media efforts, we've established a Facebook page, Instagram account and are once again using our Twitter account.

If you haven't already checked us out on social media, feel free to do so here:

https://www.facebook.com/SacVolvoClub/

In an effort to help promote the club and our events, we would like a wide array of photos that we can use to share and show some of the fun times we've had over the years. However, there are currently only so many images available to us for social media.

That's where you guys come in. What we are looking for is members of the community who are willing to share their photos for us to use on our social media accounts. All photos will be properly credited per SacVCOA Social Media and Photo/Video policies, both of which can be found by clicking here.

Photos may be shared on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram. If you would like to give us permission to use your photos, contact me here: Contact Us, Attention: Mike Baker. Please be sure to include any specifics about how you would like to be credited or if you have any particular limitations you would like us to take with your photos.

Thanks, and I can't wait to see your photos!

Sac Volvo Club Photo Hosting Changes Coming and Slideshow Tests

    posted Mar 26, 2016, 1:35 PM by Unknown user   [ updated Mar 26, 2016, 1:41 PM ]

Sac Volvo Club Photo Hosting Changes Coming

On February 12, 2016, Google announced it was closing Picasa Web Albums to focus on Google Photos.
Changes will start rolling out on May 1, 2016.

    Official Google Announcement:
Google Moving on From Picasa Web Albums
    http://googlephotos.blogspot.com/2016/02/moving-on-from-picasa.html

What does this mean for Sac Volvo Club Photos?

    • Google is creating an archive for Picasa Web Album data, so links to photos, photo albums, and slideshows should all still work during and after the transition.
    • Sac Volvo Club photos that were uploaded to Picasa Web Albums are currently also visible at Google Photos (one photo host, two different photo interfaces).
    • In case of any issues during or after the transition period, the Sac Volvo Club created an archive and back-up of the photos currently uploaded to Picasa Web Albums as well as the website.
    • There are a number of questions that remain unanswered at this time, and the Sac Volvo Club will continue to monitor this transition closely…

    Back to Top of Page

What about the Sac Volvo Club Website / Slideshows?

    • Google is also phasing out flash support, which means the current embedded slideshows will no longer function: https://developers.google.com/picasa-web/
    • Google Photos currently does not have the ability to create and embed slideshows, so this feature may be missing from the website for a while (if we chose to stick with Google Photos).
    • The Sac Volvo Club has been investigating slideshow alternatives that are easy to create, work across multiple platforms, can be embedded in Google Sites, and (preferably) allow for “unlisted” sharing.
      • These tests can be seen below.
      • If you are aware of any other alternatives, please let us know in the Comment / Feedback Form below.

    Test Purpose:
-Check visibility / usability across platforms / screen sizes.
-See if photos / slideshows appear in search results.

    Test 1: Slideshow as PDF

As created, it should open to a slideshow in Adobe Reader.
However, it only shows as a PDF when embedded in the website.
If you choose to download and view, please let me know if the slideshow function works.

    Notes:
PDF public / hosted on the website.

Test 2: Slideshow as Unlisted YouTube Video Slideshow

    Notes:

Upload defaults are different than channel defaults.
Slideshow automatic default is "Public" had to change to "Unlisted" after creating / during processing.
Will need to create new slideshow if need to add / remove photos at a later date.
