October 2010- Jeff Molander's Passing the Torch Message

March, 2009

Welcome to our new website! Our website contains just about everything that our Sacramento club members have in their memory banks that you may find to be of interest about Volvos. As you can see, not only can you view our event schedule, but there are numerous resources here that can assist you in learning about all manner of Volvo models, repair and restoration resources. In addition, we hope that you will enjoy learning more about Volvo’s history and safety reputation as well as giving you an opportunity to communicate with other Volvo enthusiasts to help you to answer any questions that you may have about your car. Sacramento Chapter club member Elizabeth Brown has put in long hours to create this website to bring these resources to you. Please drop Elizabeth a line, and let her know what you think.

In terms of myself, I became interested in Volvo’s apart from safe and reliable transportation, when I repurchased the very same ’66 122S that I used to own, on EBAY in 2003. I had originally sold this car in 1989, but the more interesting fact is that this was the very same car that was purchased in 1966 brand new, by my father (same VIN Number) in Southern California. I still have the original sales receipts, license plates and identification information stenciled on the door sill to back this up. A more thorough write-up of this story is included in the January / February, 2004 issue of Rolling Magazine. That is me popping out of the window in the adjacent photo at about age ten, during a summer trip, around 1970.

I had been driving a ’77 240 sedan and a ’97 850 T-5 during the last 20 years for general transportation, but got the restoration bug with my renewed ownership of the ’66 122S and an additional ’68 122S a couple of years later. Through internet and club resources that were available, I was able to gather all of the information that I needed to partially restore and rebuild each car. It is wonderful to note that you can still fully restore any Volvo model from the PV444 forward. This brings me back to the benefits of our website. Had I repurchased my ’66 in 1993 instead of 2003, gathering the necessary information and acquiring parts and operational recommendations would have been much, much more difficult. I never would have seen an ad for my old 122 in 1993, as EBAY did not exist and the car was 120 miles away and would not have been advertised in my local newspaper.

We hope that this website helps you to learn more and to do more with your Volvo. We also hope that it motivates you to continue to be interested in the brand as well as the different models that have been designed and sold through the years.

Sincerely,

Jeff Molander

Jeff's Note

October, 2010

I want to let you know that I will be passing the torch as Sacramento Chapter President in late November - December to club member, Mark Baldwin.  No doubt many of you know Mark as well as his beloved blue ’97 850 T-5.  Mark has planned many events for the Sacramento Chapter in the past years.  This year he planned the Volvo Independent Service tech session, and the very successful Autocross at the former Mather Air Force Base.  Mark is enthusiastic about the breadth of Volvo models and our clubs activities.  He also has a natural leadership attitude, and will work well with the Golden Gate Chapter when collaboration is necessary.  Mark will lead the 2011 planning session in December.  I will attend, and will be supportive on the directions he may wish to take the club with your cooperation.  You will be hearing from Mark soon via email as to his vision for leading our club activities in 2011.

I have enjoyed hosting activities with many of you over the last three years.   I especially appreciate the breadth of experience, organizational efforts and advice that you have offered for me and the club.  I will still be around, and hope to plan or co-plan one or two events with you and Mark in 2011. Volvo’s are great cars.  Over the years, I and members of my family have owned eight of them, from 122 models to S80’s.  Meanwhile, I need to get to work on some lingering projects on my ’66 Volvo 122S and ’72 Saab Sonett (yes it was me who snuck a Saab into our IKEA event last June)!

Sincerely,

Jeff Molander
